Racing Steering Wheel
DIY Racing Simulator

I am a racing fan, so I come up with a idea to build my own Force Feedback racing rig. I used a Open sorced software solution, and designed my own mechenical parts. Then I want to create a Formular one style Steering Wheel to make the simulation more immersive.

The Project is based on a Plan Provided by AmStudio(https://amstudioprojects.com/product/diy-3d-printed-f1-gt-wheel-with-magnetic-shift-paddles/). However I am not satified with the Look and function provided. So I decided to redesign the surface part in my way. I use my 3d printer to print the base of the steering wheel, and I did some basic sanding for a better look.

The First Version
a.The Look
The first version is my original design, The idea came from 2000s, which a screen on the steering wheel is not allowed by the FIA. Instead, all the racing teams needs to use a unified module with a array of seven-segment display.
With the help of my 3d CAD knowlege, I am able to design my own parts as well as to modify a exsisting model. I used Inventor pro from autodesk because they dont charge student. I choose the carbon fiber style wrap as the final finishing to add some competition look.

b.The Function
The project is arduino based, I choose a software called simhub(https://www.simhubdash.com/) for all of the serial communication. using the platform provided by simhub, I can easily monitor the parameter of the vehicle in the game while using physical button to control the game.

The Second Version
a.The Look
I am actually still not satisfied with the look, and also, I want more data can be showed on the gauge. Actually, I like the concept picture provided by the AmStudio. However, they are not able to sell the plan. So I need to make my own version.
The work flow is pretty similar for the design work, i used Inventor Pro for modelling and 3d printed the parts. With the help of the screen, I can add customized content. I also use badminton hand wrap to add grip as well as the style.

b.The Function
I added some new design to this version. For example, in the first version, the usb plug will easily get unplugged because of the movement, so this time I choose to convert the usb plug to a GX16 Aviation plug which can be locked to the receiver.
